Lemony Lace Elderberry

Source | Unknown

ABOUT This multi-seasonal shrub is an interesting addition to gardens. Its foliage begins with a reddish color that will change to shades that range from golden yellow to light or medium green, and chartreuse. Over the spring white flowers will emerge followed by berries in the fall. This North American native is bright and colorful with ornamental foliage that spreads as it grows. It does well in full to partial sun, needs little maintenance, and prefers wet but well-drained soil. Pruning is best done after the first frost.

DESIGN The lemony lace elderberry shrub works well in a variety of designs including planted in pots, along borders, or in wildlife gardens. This plant is highly deer-resistant but will attract birds and pollinators.

CAUTION It is potentially fatal to dogs if left untreated for more than an hour. Elderberry plants produce cyanide in unripe or uncooked parts, consumption may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and more serious poisoning may occur if larger amounts are ingested. Berries may be edible to humans if they are properly cooked before consuming.
