ABOUT Tulips come in large bulbs that can be planted in mid to late spring and early to mid-fall. They take full sun in damp to the touch, well-irrigated soil. Hydration of tulips does not need to be overly wet. Color and fragrance come in a wide variety, many of the scents are categorized as citrus, green, or honey. The bloom comes in multiple shapes including the well-known bulb shape, the double bloom that looks almost like a rose, egg-shaped, and fringed. Winter blooms can be forced if the plant is moved indoors.
DESIGN Tulips can be placed both indoors and outdoors. They grow upright on a sturdy stalk that ends in petal bloom. Although commonly used as bedded plants, they also work in garden borders, as potted plants, and can be used as cut flowers in elegant floral arrangements.
CAUTION Humans, cats, dogs, and horses are considered at risk for tulip poisoning. Symptoms may include depression, vomiting, diarrhea, and salivation. They may also attract pollinators like bees and hoverflies, though some species of tulips may be less attractive than others.
